Attending in a college is not a simple matter. There should be any qualifications that should be fulfilled by all candidates who want to attend a college whether it is State- or even Private-University. Such as, they should be had written test, interview and others based on the qualifications in the college. Based on the background above, before attending a college, there should be any preparation about what department that would be chosen then there is no regret in the future. It cannot be denied that every student who wants to choose a department should have their own motivation and perception; and every student must have background of different motivation and perception between a student and the others in choosing department. In this matter, motivation and perception that underlie student to select Social Wealth Department cannot be predicted because of different motivation and perception they have. Several motivations can be measured from their interest toward the department whether the support from self (intrinsic) or support from other (extrinsic). In this study, the researcher uses qualitative study where students as the main instrument or regarded as tool for investigation. It can be the main sources in all process of investigation that is planning, implementation, data collection and the last as report of the investigation. While the subject of investigation is students of Social Wealth Department year 2006 by total sampling because the subject of study limited on 5 persons. The method to collect the data is interview and observation to discover materials as information. The process of data analysis is beginning from detailing data in data presentation; the researcher will review the result from the beginning investigation then made a conclusion from all. From the result of study about motivation and perception of why students chose Social Wealth Department is because they like Social Wealth Department, interested in, and want to understand this department. The motivation is from others (extrinsic) like the influence of peer, relative, society or neighborhood. While students’ perception about Social Wealth department is that this department is very good and qualified from knowledge or even from teaching system of the advisors.
