Abstract

This study aims to explore written communication skills based on learning styles and gender. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The research subjects in this study were 6 students in grade IX of SMP Negeri 2 Pamekasan, each of which consisted of two students. Students with visual learning styles (VL and VP), students with auditory learning styles (AL and AP) and students with kinesthetic learning styles (KL and KP). Data collection techniques used are giving learning style questionnaires, communication skills tests, and interviews. Then the data is analyzed and described. The students' written communication skills test is obtained from the work of the story about material building material. The written communication skills indicator is assessed to consist of four aspects, namely: 1) understanding the problem (stating the problem into a picture of mathematical ideas and determining a question); 2) Creating a mathematical model (using mathematical symbols to write down the results of the thought appropriately); 3) completing a mathematical model (using the relationship of each mathematical thought); 4) determine the final answer to the question (write the conclusion of the answer according to the problem in the problem). Based on the results of the analysis and discussion it can be concluded that VL and VP students were able to write down four aspects of written mathematical communication skills, AL students were only able to write down the first aspect but were unable to write down what was asked, AP students were able to solve the existing problems by writing down four aspects but less precisely in formulating a mathematical model, students of KL and KP were able to write down four aspects of the research but there were some aspects that were written incomplete
