Abstract

This study goes from the presence of various kinds of news program in television nowadays. Almost every TV station in Indonesia has its prime programs, as well as news programs which are produced excellently to attract people’s interests to watch it. The emergence of news program in form of Newstainment indicates that the improvement and innovation does not simply belong to entertainment programme. Newstainment has become new genre in television broadcasting sector which merge news and entertainment. We can see this obviously on newstainment GOOD MORNING which is relayed live from Trans TV every day at 8:30 a.m. This sixtyminutes length programme offers wide range of news and information, comes in different performance. In this programme, we could not find seemingly formal host with formal talk, instead in this program the host dress in rather casual as well they present the news with less formal language the way we talk in everyday life. Nevertheless, this programme still holds the broadcasting ethics without neglecting the value of the news they present. The problems of the study is formulated as; is there any influence of the attactiveness of the newstainment program GOOD MORNING on Trans TV toward students’ interest in watching GOOD MORNING and How great is the influence of the attactiveness of the newstainment program GOOD MORNING on Trans TV toward students’ interest in watching GOOD MORNING? Theories employed in this study is the theory of uses and gratification, the theory of individual differences. This study is an associative explanative, which is a study conducted to examine the relationship between variables to be hypothesized then . the hypothesis itself depicts the influence between two variables or more, to obtain whether a variable is influenced by another. While, the basis of this study is survey, which is a study by collecting data from a number of individuals in simultaenous time (or period). The population of this study is students majored in Communication in Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang class of 2005, with particular characteristics that meets the criteria for this study. From the characteristics formulated, there found 252 students to be determined as the population. Samples of 72 people are obtained by using the statistical calculation employing Slovin formula. The researches uses questionnaire as the data collection technique. To discover the influence of attactiveness of the newstainment programme GOOD MORNING (X) toward the students’ interest in watching GOOD MORNING (Y), the researches employs Simple Regression Formula, Correlation Coefficient, and Determionation Coefficient. The result of the study shows that Y = 6,841+0,760X. It means that the attactiveness of thenewstainment programme GOOD MORNING gives positive influence toward the students’ interest in watching GOOD MORNING. To obtain how great the level of the influence of the attactiveness toward the interest, it can be seen from the determination coefficient value which shows value of 70,3%. Meaning this level shows that the bound variables is influenced with 70,3% by free variables, and correlation coefficient value of 0,760 meaning that if the attractiveness of the newstainment programme GOOD MORNING increase as much as 1 unit, consequently the student’s interest will increase as much as 0,760. Hence, the influence resulted is considered as of the strong level, while the 29,7% influenced by another variables is excluded in this study.
