Abstract

metabolism. Lack of physical activity will decrease the value of VO2max, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Ambon banana (Musa acuminata colla) contains nitrate which can improve the value of VO2max. Objective: The study aimed to find out the effect of Ambon banana (Musa acuminata colla) diet on VO2max of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang Medical Faculty students. Methods: Experimental study was conducted with pre test – post test design for two sample groups. Control group received no treatment (normal diet). Treatment group was given four Ambon bananas (Musa acuminata colla) everyday for six days. Data were analyzed using Mann Whitney test and Spearman correlation test. Results: There were significant differences on the Mann Whitney test result of VO2max value between control group and treatment group with significant value of 0.000 (p<0.05) with 95% confidence interval (0,22-0,58) control group and 95% confidence interval (2,71-3,65) treatment group. VO2max value was increased in the age range of 18-21 years old. Male students had VO2max value higher than female students. Spearman correlation test obtained a significant value of 0,000 and a correlation value of 0,910 which means there is a linear and the correlation is very strong. Conclusion: Ambon banana (Musa acuminata colla) diet affected increase VO2max of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang Medical Faculty students.
