Abstract

Background: Citrus reticulata peel has proven to inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes with secondary metabolites which include alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, and polyphenols. Objective: The aim of this research was observing at the inhibitory zone of Citrus reticulata fruit peel fraction against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes with different concentrations. Method: This research applied antibacterial activity test using the disc diffusion method. The n-hexane fraction used in this study was obtained from previous studies. The antibacterial activity test was conducted with the concentration of n-hexane fraction used 25 mg/ml; 65 mg/ml; 125 mg/ml; 250 mg/ml; and 500 mg/ml. The disc containing the test solution, negative control, and positive control was affixed to the plate which contained Propionibacterium acnes and MHA media, then incubated at 37° C for ± 24 hours and the clear zone formed was measured in diameter. Results : The results of the secondary metabolite identification in the previous study showed that n-hexane fascination of Citrus reticulata fruit peel contained alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, and polyphenols. The results of testing the antibacterial activity at a concentration of 25 mg/ml, 65 mg/ml, 125 mg/ml and 250 mg did not provide a zone of inhibition while at a concentration of 500 mg/ml gave an inhibition zone of 13.5 mm. Conclutions : From the result of observation in this research it can be concluded that relatively the inhibition obtained fall into the category of resistant, so it’s not effective to work as an antibacterial.
