Abstract

This thesis focuses on the teachers’ perception on cooperative learning method used in teaching speaking at SMPN 3 Batu with two purposes: (1) to know the types of cooperative learning method used in teaching speaking for eight grades, and (2) to know the teachers’ perception for selecting cooperative learning method used in teaching speaking for eight grades. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method, the research was intended to describe the teachers’ reason for selecting the cooperative learning as the method in teaching speaking for eight grade. The participants were English teachers who teach speaking for eight grade at SMPN 3 Batu. The researcher used interview and document analysis as the instruments for collecting the data. The findings revealed that there were positive perceptions. The teachers are predominantly used jigsaw and cooperative learning as a method. The teachers’ reason for to do so were: (1) Cooperative learning method is correlated with the role of teachers and students in 2013 curriculum; (2) Cooperative learning method makes the students participate actively in learning activity; and (3) Cooperative learning method makes the students feel comfortable in learning activity.
