Abstract
In learning English language, there are a lot of ways to learn which is different between an individual and others. Students learn based on their interest and somehow it is influenced by learning style. Based on the learning style which is different one and other, some kinds of strategy in learning start to appear to addapt student’s interest. One of the example is music. Some students use music to boost their mood in learning. However, the impact of music in learning process gives different impact in each individual. The aims of this research were to describe the student’s perception on pop music toward English learning and to find out the reason of the student’s perception on pop music toward English learning. A mixed method was used as a research design in this research. Quantitative research was used to find out the percentage of the student’s perceptions on pop music toward English learning, while qualitative research was used in giving description of the reason of the student’s perception on pop music toward English learning. The sample that is taken for this research were 35 students of 2015 ELED UMM from Class A. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and observation. The findings found that positive perception that was given became the dominant one with the percentage of 69% while the negative perception was 31%. There are some reasons of student’s positive perception. Those reasons were it has ear-catching rhythm, beautiful lyrics and meanings, it can build a better feeling and it was a famous genre. Then, the reason of student’s negative perception were using music in learning is not effective way for them and pop music has no strength compared to other genres.
