Abstract

In teaching English, the teacher should know the way how to attract students’ attention. The teacher needs to create interesting activities to attract young learners’ attention since students of elementary school have short attention span in learning. One of the interesting activities is playing song in the classroom. It will help the teacher to attract students’ attention for song can be a stimulus in learning. Therefore, using song in teaching English for young learners becomes one solution to attract students’ attention. Thus, the purposes of this research are (1) To describe how the teacher applies the song in teaching English, (2) To know the advantages and disadvantages of teaching English by using song. The research design is descriptive qualitative research by observing an English teacher who is teaching English at the fourth grade of SD Negeri Jarit 1 Lumajang. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and semi structured interview. In the observation the researcher used field notes and video recording of the teaching and learning process. The result of this research shows that: (1) In the classroom, the teacher chooses song which relates to the topic. The teacher writes the lyric on the white board and teaches the students how to sing. (2) Playing song gives advantages and disadvantages when it is used by the teacher in the classroom. The advantages are song improve students’ attention in learning such as the students participate in the classroom activities, try to answer some questions and they also have low anxiety since they are excited in learning English. Therefore, the English teacher for young learners needs to know how to apply the song in the classroom.
