Abstract

Mukti Echwantono is a Fine Art photographer from Malang who is better known in Europe than his own country. His photo story work, Ophelia, succeeded in covering the California magazine, Maroon 5. The work of Ophelia was taken by Mukti in 2013 by adapting a fictional story titled Hamlet Prince of Denmark. Ophelia is one of the female cast in the story who is described as committing suicide by drowning herself in the river. The action was due to the pressure of a culture experienced by Ophelia. The formulated problem is how Ophelia is a representation of feminism in the Hamlet Prince of Denmark fiction in the photo story work Mukti Echwantono entitled Ophelia. This study aims to analyze and describe Ophelia as a representation of feminism in the Hamlet Prince of Denmark fiction in the photo story work Mukti Echwantono entitled Ophelia. The theory used is semiotics from Rolland Barthes, where this theory explains the meaning of denotation through markers and markers that will produce signs, connotation meanings and not forget the myths in it. This study uses qualitative research methods with interpretive types. Data collection techniques using documentation. Based on the results of the study, a woman named Ophelia who was depicted in a photo of Fine Art story by Mukti was a woman who was weak, easily depressed, obedient and easily dropped. Feminism appears in Ophelia's photo story, depicted by Ophelia who immerses herself due to patriarchal cultural ties. The photo story of Ophelia illustrates the real life of the women of the Renaissance which lasted in the 14th to 17th centuries and today. Ophelia's figure has a feminine and brave side. Ophelia is proof that Renaissance women were known to be oppressed and received a lot of injustice. Women are prohibited from being involved in social and political activities, they are only focused on taking care of homework.
