Abstract

This study examined bilingual program in teaching and learning in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) taught at Brawijaya Smart School Malang. In this study, the researcher wants to find out the effect of bilingual program on the second graders’ English proficiency. The purpose of this study is to find whether bilingual program gives a significant effect or not to the second graders’ English proficiency in bilingual class compared to monolingual program. Ex post facto research design and quantitative research approach were used in this study. The sample of this research was the second graders at Brawijaya Smart School, Malang. In collecting data, the researcher used the document analysis that is the students’ English score as the data source of this study. The researcher took two classes, which are bilingual and monolingual. Bilingual class consists of 23 students, while monolingual class consists of 24 students. Then, they were 47 students in total. The researcher applied a statistical formula that is an Independent Sample T-Test to analyze the data with the significance is .05. The result showed that the Mean score of bilingual class is 89.39, while the Mean score of monolingual class is 88.54. The result of significance is .637 means .637>.05. it can be seen that there is no significant difference between bilingual and monolingual English Proficiency, because the level of difference score is .85 points. Some factors were found; the level of material difficulty, students participation, and the different purpose of teaching and learning.
