Abstract

Reading is one of the most important skills in learning a language in order to acquire knowledge. As a core part of language learning, it is not effortless process. Unfortunately, lots of difficulties are encountered by students in understanding a text. Factors influencing the Reading difficulties are being important part of this study. Further, the writer is concerned to identify the Reading difficulties and to recognize factors influencing the reading difficulties in ESP Reading at Medical Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The design of this study employed qualitative research method. The descriptive research design was adopted for this study in effort to discover phenomena in the classroom. The data were the results of the test and transcription of interview. They were collected from the students of Medical Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang who were in their first semester. The instruments of this study comprised test, interview guideline, and audio recording. The findings of this study revealed that the Reading difficulties experienced by Medical department consisted of five types of basic skills in Reading. Those were semantic skills, making inference, phonological skills, language comprehension, vocabulary and background knowledge, and working memory. The factors influencing the Reading difficulties were based on several points. They were language factors, textual factors, emotional factors, and personality factors.
