Abstract

South Korea, which has a large military capability, is not offensive when receiving nuclear threats from North Korea. Instead South Korea prefers to be defensitive. This research discusses about the reason of South Korea’s defensive against North Korea's nuclear threat. This research uses an explanatory method by collecting data through the library research. In supporting this research, researchers used theory of constructivism identity by Alexander Wendt. The theory divides four identities namely personal identity, type, role and collective. In the formation of identity there are two aspects, namely actions and interests. South Korea's defensive actions have an interest in maintaining regional stability. Based on these interests, South Korea has a role as a stabilizer. The identity of South Korea's role as a stabilizer is influenced by changes in the international system and international groups formed by the nuclear crisis that took place on the Korean peninsula.
