Abstract

Background : Infectious diseases are still one of the important public health issues, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. One of the traditional medicinal plants used by Indonesian people is the Dayak bulb (Eleutherine palmifolia(L.) Merr) which is believed to be an anticancer, lowering cholesterol, antihypertensive, antimicrobial , and antioxidants. Objective : This study aimed to observe the class of the compound contained and the antibacterial activity of ethanol fraction of Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr bulb against Staphylococus aureus bacteria by disc diffusion method. Method : Antibacterial activity assay using disk diffusion method. Etanol fraction of the tuber Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr was processed by immersion maceration in order to separate the polar molecule which concentration 20mg/ml, 40mg/ml, 60mg/ml, 80mg/ml, 120mg/ml, and 240mg/ml for both S. aureus bactria. Result and Conclusion : The ethanol fraction of the bulb Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) contains secondary metabolites terpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones and phenolics, and has antibacterial activity against S. aureus showing by the clearing zone with concentration 1,4 mg/disk is 10,23 mm; concentration 2,8 mg/disk is 12,83 mm; concentration 4,2 mg/disk is 14,27 mm; concentration 5,6 mg/disk is 14,9 mm; concentration 8,4 mg/disk is 16,67 mm; dan concentration 16,8 mg/disk is 18,57 mm. The conclusion rising of concentration rising the clear zone and more poten to Gram positif bacteria (S. aureus).
