Abstract
Anxiety in sports is one of the factors that affects performance of athletes before matches. The anxiety that arises does not only consist of cognitive components, but also involves physiological or somatic components. Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) intervention is a form of cognitive therapy that combines instructional intervention and music therapy that can help athletes to overcome competitive anxiety before competitions. This experimental study aims to examine the effect of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) interventions in overcoming the competitive anxiety of athletes before competitions. The subject of this study consists of three experimental groups and one control group of athletes who were competing in the Student Futsal league in Malang. The questionnaire used in this study for data collection is the Competitive Anxiety scale that was prepared by the researcher himself. The used research design is non randomized pretest posttest control group design to measure the effectiveness of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) interventions for athlete anxiety. The used data analysis is non-parametric: namely Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Mann-Whitney test. The results showed a decrease in competitive anxiety. Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) intervention is the most effective intervention, because the results in this group show the most significant decrease in competitive anxiety
