Abstract

Pyrhophyllite material is one of natural material resource in East Java province which is not well known yet. It is a metamorphic rock that have a high content of aluminum silicate. The distribution of pyrophyllite in Southern Malang, especially the area of Sumbermanjing is estimated around millions of ton in approximately 20 acre of area. The data collection technique is through field observation, interview, and documentation. The high content of silicate, the size of grain, and the small volume of its cavity enable prophyllite as an alternative partial cementitious of cement in the mixture of a certain material such as concrete. The engineering of pyrophyllite material is by reflux method through diluting the acid solution (H2SO4) 1 M in a temperature of ± 100 0 C for about four hours. The test aims at finding out the characteristics of pyrophyllite before and after activated by the activator of (H2SO4) 1 M. The test were compressive strength and mortar absorption. The result shows that the compressive strength of mortar toward the variation of pyrophyllite treatment change as well as conventional pyrophyllite as the cementitious material with the activator of (H2SO4) 1 M had the maximum strength of 16.96 MPa on the variation of 10%. There was an increase of absorption level about 5.54% and on the pyrophyllite addition>10%, the compressive strength decreased, and on the contrary, the absorption value was better.
