Abstract

This research is about the implemetation of Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy in teaching reading. It aimed to examined the effect of the strategy in reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 17 Malang to the second grade students. The sample was designed in two groups; 8A as experimental group which consists of 33 students and 8B as control group which consists of 33 students. The experimental group was taught by using DRTA strategy while control group was taught by using the strategy that is used by English teacher as usually (convensional strategy). This research used test as the instrument. The test was divided into pre-test and posttes. The result of the research showed that there was an improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using DRTA strategy as t-count is 4.583 and t-table is 1.997. The resultof computation is 4.583>1.997. Thus, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Additionally, it is also supported by mean value of experimental group is 75.45 higher than control group is 68.48. Indeed, the use of DRTA strategy setting achieved better reading comprehension than who were not taught by using Direct Reading Thinking Activity.
