Abstract

Racial discrimination is an act where people deny the existence of other races. It is about biological differences such as, skin color, height, and the shape of face (Schaefer, 2004). In society, people are divided depending on their race. Those phenomena usually happen in ethnically diverse country such as United States. Teaching strategy is some ways done by the teachers in guiding students to solve their problem (Brown, 2014). Those ways are aimed to improve students’ capability in catching every explaination given by the teacher. In this case, the teachers take a role as facilitators. Those two definitions above suit the title of this research that is An Analysis of Teacher’s Strategy to Solve Racial Discrimination in “Freedom Writers” Movie. According to Schmidt and Bogarad (2006), movie is moving pictures that show the behavior of humans’ life. It has the aim of entertaining someone who watches it. This research is aimed to 1) find out kinds of racial discrimination in “Freedom Writers” movie, and 2) know the teacher’s strategy in solving racial discrimination in “Freedom Writers” movie. In analysing the data, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. Moreover, this research used objective approach due to researcher’s focus on analysing the content of movie. The research results showed that from five types of discrimination, there were two types of discrimination. They are exclusion and selective inclusion. The teacher’s strategy to solve those two kinds of racial discrimination was affective strategy. In affective strategy, there are four activities that each of them can solve each racial discrimination. They are 1) activating supportive emotion which was done by Erin Gruwell as the first step to know the students’ problem, 2) minimizing negative emotions, and 3) generating motivation; both of them have the aim of solving exclusion, and 4) building positive attitude which was aimed to solve selective inclusion.
