Abstract

Reading is one way to acquire the knowledge from book. It is one of the most important skills because many textbooks are written in English. Through printing media students can adapt various information they need in the daily life. They should have ability in reading in order to get information from the text. In reading English there are many unknown vocabularies that the students usually find in text. Based on the information from the observation, the students still have some problems in learning reading at SMPN 11 Malang. The purposes of this research are: 1) to find out the students’ problems in learning reading at second grade of SMPN 11 Malang, 2) to investigate how the students solve the problems in learning reading at SMPN 11 Malang. The design of the research was qualitative research. The research subject in this research was in the second grade that consisted of 24 students. To collect the data, the researcher used observation field notes and interview as the instruments to find the data about the students’ problems in learning reading and also the students’ solutions to cope with the problems. After doing observation and interview, the result showed that the students had problems with their Lack of Vocabulary, Incorrect Pronunciation, Lack of Fluency, Prior Knowledge and Lack of Comprehension, Students’ Anxiety, and Lack of Task Instructions. Furthemore, the result also revealed with the students’ solutions to the problems, such as using dictionaries, memorizing, asking the teacher or the smartest friend, listening to English song, reading more books, and be brave to overcome anxiety.
