Abstract

Register is one of the language variations in sociolinguistics (Yule, 2010). Register constitutes a specific term used by people in particular community. One of the communities using registers is broadcasting major of SMK Negeri 3 Batu. SMK Negeri 3 Batu has 4 majors; broadcasting, multimedia, animation, and software engineering. The broadcasting students and teachers usually applyregisters as their way to communicate effectively among them in order to simplify their communication. This research was intended to (1) find the registers used by the broadcasting students and teachers of SMK Negeri 3 Batu, (2) know the meaning of the registers used by broadcasting students and teachers of SMK Negeri 3 Batu, and (3) know what are the word-formation processes of the registers used by broadcasting students and teachers of SMK Negeri 3 Batu. The implemented method in this research was qualitative with the broadcasting major of 11th grade at SMK Negeri 3 Batu as the subject. The data collection method were non-participant observation and semi-structured interview. Then the used instruments were field notes and interview guideline. The deriving result of this study shows that there were 68 registers used by the broadcasting students and teachers of SMK Negeri 3 Batu. The reported registers were classified into word-formation process that consisted of 31 compounding, 13 borrowing, 14 derivations, 5 acronyms, 3 coinages, and 2 blending.
