Abstract

Aims of this research were to know what kinds of figurative language are used in Katy Perry’s song “Chained to The Rhythm”, and to describe the meaning of 15 lyrics in “Chained to The Rhythm” song. The single was officially released February 10, 2017. Perry said this song represent political/mental liberation. (Chained to the rythm song broke a Spotify record for the most first day streams for female artist in the United States with 3,062,293 streams, Nick Romano (2017). This research used descriptive qualitative method and inductive approach. The researcher choose an inductive approach because the data which are analyzed are not in form of numbers but in words. Using descriptive method, the researcher analyzed the type, form, and meaning of the figurative language that contained in the song's lyrics to get through overview of what will be analyzed. The researcher took song on youtube as the source of the data. The researcher collected the data by identifying, classifying and explaining the lyrics about figurative language in Katy Perry’s song lyrics. The result shows that they are 14 of figurative languages in the song. They are 3 metaphors, 5 symbols, 2metonymies, 1 litotes, 1 simile, 1 oxymoron, and 1 idiom. The most dominant type of figurative language in song is symbol. It can be indicated that the song writer uses symbol to make the songmeaning full, to express how the song writer feels, and to make his song vividly imaginable.
