Abstract

This study aims to find out and explore the meaning of Unity Action cadres of Indonesian Muslim Students in Malang City about flat earth conspiracy videos on the Flat Earth 101 youtube channel. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach using basic analysis of reception analysis or acceptance analysis. The subjects in this study were cadres of the Unity Action of Indonesian Muslim Students in Malang City who had different social backgrounds according to the criteria determined by the researcher so that the 5 research subjects were obtained. The researcher uses data collection techniques with structured or in-depth interviews and audio documentation. Whereas to test the validity of the data is by source triangulation. The theory used is the theory of encoding / decoding proposed by Stuart Hall. The results of the study found that the meaning and acceptance of audiences towards flat earth conspiracy videos on the youtube FE101 channel differed depending on the knowledge, experience, social status, and psychology of each research subject. In the position of The Dominant-hegemonic, the subject fully trusts what has been said by the video, with the meaning that Islam in the Qur'an has confirmed that the earth is indeed flat. Whereas in the position of The Negotiated Reading the subject was initially interested and trusted in the information conveyed by the video, but over time and after various discussions they did not believe anymore and still believed that the interpretation of the Qur'an in question was a round earth. The conclusion of this study is that the audience gives a different meaning to the flat earth conspiracy video on the youtube channel FE101. Although the five subjects are in the same organization, they have different meanings for the same text. Subject 2 in the Dominant-hegemonic category has a background based on his knowledge while still in school, and his logical thinking, agreeing that the video makes sense. According to him, the knowledge of religion that he had gotten was the same as what was conveyed by the video. In contrast to Subject 1, Subject 3, Subject 4, and Subject 5 which fall into the Negotiated reading category, the results of their meaning are derived from their knowledge in finding information sources. One background that affects Subject 1 is his character as an intellectual, who must seek information from various credible and actual sources, to respond to a new phenomenon.
