Abstract

Collocation is a structural word combination formed by two or more part of speeches which create a certain meaning and express widespread expression. To spread extensive information provided in English, the role of collocation as one of the linguistic features is important. It is considered important for the reason that collocation is the main key in language production and comprehension used as an indicator of L2 learners’ overall proficiency in the field of second language acquisition. Moreover, discovering collocation will help L2 learners to gain native-like language production. This current study aims at: (1) finding the typologies of English Collocations used by Hazel and Augustus in the movie “The Fault in Our Star” and (2) identifying the combinations of English Collocations used by Hazel and Augustus in the movie “The Fault in Our Star”. This study employed a qualitative research method and recruited “The Fault in Our Stars” movie as the research object. It was a drama movie directed by John Green in 2014 in which Hazel and Augustus were the main characters. In terms of instruments, researcher chose four documents, namely the movie, movie script, BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English, and Oxford Collocation Dictionary. It was found that there are two typologies and thirteen combinations of English collocation verbalized by Hazel and Augustus in the movie. Besides, it was also found a unique combination of collocation discovered in the movie that does not fit to any patterns of provided combinations.
