Abstract

Learning foreign language is not easy as learning the first language (L1), because there are some aspects that affect learning pronunciation. The aspects include mother tongue, individual’s motivation, and pronunciation ability. This phenomenon also happens on Madurese students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The Madurese students, whose mother tongue is Maduranese, experience the influence of Maduranese towards their English Pronunciation. This research aims at analyzing the influence of Maduranese language towards the pronunciation of English faced by Madurese students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research applied qualitative research design. The research subjects consisted of 10 Madurese students from English Language Education Department, a student from Math Department, and a student from Accountancy Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Observation and interview were applied in this research. The observation was done by recording how the students to identify their pronunciation. Besides, the interview was used to recognize the factors that made the Madurese students difficult to pronounce the English pronunciation. The findings revealed some part of English pronunciation that was influenced by Maduranes language faced by the Madurese students, because both English pronunciation and Maduranese pronunciation were different. They included consonants, vowels, and diphthong. The consonants were [ʃ], [p], [v], [θ], and [ð]. In addition, the vowels were [ɪ], [ɒ], and [ə] sound.The last, diphthong were [aʊ], [eɪ], and [aɪ]. Because of their Maduranese interference, the Maduranese students would pronounced the words in English as the example she /ʃiː/ as /si/, dear /dɪə/ as /dər/, snake /sneɪk/ as /snek/, and hate /heɪt/ as /het/.
