Abstract
In learning English, students are expected to achieve four basic English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As one of the receptive skills, speaking becomes an important process in communicating with people. Speaking is common activity to communicate, get and share information with people. The main purpose of this study was to find out the effectiveness of using situational communication activities on students’ speaking skill at the first grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 09 Gondanglegi. The research design in this research was pre-experimental research. The population of this research were 57 students in first grade. The sample of this research were 24 students that has specific criteria. The criteria are 1. The students must have low in English speaking, 2. The students do not take another class or private lesson in speaking English, 3. The students only learn English in school. The data obtained were analyzed statistically by using paired sample t-test used SPSS 22.0 version. The primary data of this research were collected from the students pre-test and post-test. The primary data were collected, then analyzed by using paired sample t-test formula. Based on the calculation, the mean score after doing the experimental to the subject was higher than the pre-test before doing the experimental (61.46>48.96). The result of the t-test analysis was 0.00 (0.00<0.05), it means that Situational Communication effective for students’ speaking, therefore the (Ha) was accepted. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students who are taught by using Situational Communication Activities improve their speaking skill. Therefore, Situatioal Communication Activities was an effective strategy in teaching speaking. The researcher suggested English teacher to use this strategy in teaching Speaking.
