Abstract

Debate is already being one of the way to enhance the speaking ability among the students. It is not only used in the classroom learning process, but also outside the classroom, such in EDS ILF UMM. Since debate is one of the effective ways to increase the speaking skill, the researcher believed that the debaters need to possess a good fluency and accuracy as the basic standard of a good speaking. In this research, the researcher came out with the problems of how is the fluency and accuracy level of debaters in EDS ILF UMM. Thus, the objectives of this research were to know the debaters’ level of fluency and accuracy. This research used both quantitative and qualitative design. The quantitative used in order to do the simple calculation of the fluency range, meanwhile the qualitative was a descriptive qualitative in specific. In selecting the research subjects, snowball sampling was used by the researcher. There were six debaters as the research subject in this research. To gain the data from the research subject, the researcher used a performance test in the form of debate practice and document of performance in the form of audio transcription. After the analysis was conducted, the result showed the debaters of EDS ILF UMM had a fluent level of speaking. It was proven by the standards of fluency; speech rate, mean length of pauses, and number of disfluencies. From all the standards, the research subjects passed the standard; the speech rate was above the standard, the mean length of pauses was between 0.2 – 1 seconds, and the number of disfluencies was in the range of fluent level. On the other hand, the research subject had a less accurate level in speaking. It could be seen through their common mistakes or errors they had made during the debate practice.
