Abstract

Learning English language for young learners in Indonesia is not an easy task. Young learners must make efforts to understand, to use and to adapt a new language. The fun way of teaching is needed to help children in language learning. It is expected that children will enjoy the learning process with doing warm-up activity before starting the lesson. This study sought answers to the following questions: The kinds of warm-up activity, the implementation of warm-up activity, and the advantages of using warm-up activity in teaching English grade IV at SD Negeri Mojorejo 01 Batu. Descriptive qualitative research design is used in this study. Therefore, the subject of the study is teacher, who teaches English at grade IV at SD Negeri Mojorejo 01 Batu. The techniques used were nonparticipant observation and unstructured interview. The instruments used were field note and interview guide. In order to analyze the data collection, there are some steps such as: explaining the kinds of warm-up activity based on the data collection, describing the implementation of warm-up activity, finding out the advantages of using warm-up, interpreting the whole data, and drawing conclusion based on the finding. The result of the study shows that English teacher used two kinds of warm-up activity such as: game and question time. The English teacher implemented warm-up activity in the beginning of class before entering to the material and, after greeting and singing classroom passwords. While the advantages of using warm-up activity were helping teacher to get student’s motivation, student’s focus, and increasing student’s vocabulary but in contrast, some students showed the opposite result.
