Abstract

Memorising new vocabulary is very difficult for young learners who have different mother tongue that they use to communicate. They do not practice their English regularly so that they gain less vocabulary. A guessing game is a good game to encourage the student to speak up and increase their vocabulary. “Who am I” game is included as guessing game which can facilitate the students to get new vocabularies and recall their memory about vocabularies they rarely used as well train their speaking skill.This research is about using “who am I” game in teaching vocabulary for 5th graders at SDN Gondanglegi Wetan 02 Malang. The main purpose of the research is to find out the effectiveness of “who am I” game to improve the students’ vocabulary. This research used quantitative design. The population was the fifth graders at SDN Gondanglegi Wetan 02 Malang. There are 19 students as the sample of this research. After the treatment “who am I” game to the the experience group as well as the lecturing method to the control group were implemented, the researcher gave pretest and postest in order to collect the data. As the result, the implementation of “who am I” game in teaching vocabulary showed a good impact on the students’ vocabulary. The students become more engaged in the group activity. Besides, based on the data analysis of the pretest and posttest result of both groups processed by using Independent Sample T-Test on SPSS, it was found that t-value was lower than 0.05. In other words, the use of “who am I” game improves the students’ vocabulary.
