Abstract

Natural feed is one of the important factors as a basis for fulfilling nutrition at the beginning of life of copepod larvae, mollusc larvae, shrimp larvae, and fish larvae. One type of plankton as larval feed is a type of Skeletonema Costatum. Skeletonema Costatum is one of the phytoplankton with hhidh protein content of approximately 50%, has a content that can spur growth (growth factor) and is very good for fish and shrimp. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of differences in salinity levels on the growth of Skeletonema Costatum. This research was conducted at the Fisheries Laboratory, Faculty, of Agriculture- Animal Husbandry, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The method used in the study is the experimental method using a completely randomized design. In this study there were 5 treatments with different salinity, namely 15ppt, 20ppt, 25ppt, 30ppt, and 35ppt. This study was carried out for 4,5 days. The main parameters observed in the study were Skeletonema Costatum cell growth. Then the data is analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result showed that the administration of different salinity treatments (15ppt, 20ppt, 25ppt, 30ppt, and 35ppt) on phytoplankton skeletonema costatum types did not affect the number of densities with F. Calculate 3.43<from F. Table 0.05 (3.48) and 0.01 (5.99). Water quality in this study for temperatures ranging form 26-29 oC and pH between 7-8. The conclusion of this study is that the highest salinity for the growth of Skeletonema Costatum is at salinity of 25ppt with the number of cells at peak growth averaging 6.08x10 cells/ml. It can be used for Skeletonema Costatum culture media because the growth result between treatments are not different far and relatively the same.
