Abstract

This study discusses film as a representation of feminism. The object is Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts film, which depicted the life struggles of two women to fight against class dominance in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. The researcher chose this film because contained elements of feminism shown by Marsha Timothy and Dea Panendra through the scenes they played. The formulation of the problem is what the meaning of Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts film as a representation of feminism. The method used qualitative approach, interpretative type with Roland Barthes semiotic analysis. The instrument used table of elements of film and analysis of denotations, connotations and myths. The data sources used are scene pieces that contain signs related to feminism from reading sources such as books, thesis, and articles. Based on the results of this study, Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts film due to the theory used by researcher, Marxist feminism theory. Men domination of women is a product of the domination of class relations and economic exploitation of one class by another class is a central characteristic of social structure. Family as the basis of oppression as a result of the capital needs of women being domestic workers at home. However, the women in this film try to be highlighted in many ways, and able to equalize their position with men through unexpected resistance from their look. The conclusion is, the meaning of Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts film as a representation of feminism if interpreted from the perspective of researchers as audience, this film portrays many women's resistance to men through violence. This film is more precisely displays feminism through violence as a form of self-defense which is also resisted by using violence through scenes calmly played by Marlina and Novi, as a result of the domination of class relations by Markus because Marlina has not paid off her son's funeral debt.
