Abstract

Learning English is a need for people since it plays an essential role in various aspects of life such as technology, education, entertainment, and tourism. The government of Indonesia determines English as a compulsary subject from Junior High School to Senior High School. Moreover, English is being an examination subject beside Bahasa Indonesia, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, reading is considered as one of skills that students should master in order to improve students’ grammar punctuation and to enrich their vocabulary. In the teaching and learning process, the researcher emphasized in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement in which the researcher chose Two Stay Two Stray learning method as the effective way to make students’ reading achievement better. This research used quantitative research in which the subjects of this research were students at X grade in MAN Malang 1. Moreover, the purpose of study was to answer the result of Two Stay Two Stray method that was used in order to improve students’ reading comprehension achievements at X grade of MAN Malang 1. The data were collected through interview guidelines (unstructured interview) and test (pre-test and post-test). The result of this study showed that Two Stay Two Stray learning method in reading comprehension can improve students’ reading comprehension achievement at X grade in MAN Malang 1. It can be seen from the score of experimental and control group in post-test. The students in experimental group got better score (it can be seen from the mean score of pre-test and post-test) than the students in control group. It was found that the result of pre-test mean score of experimental group was 72.19 and the result of pre-test mean score of control group was 69.42. It showed that the score of control and experimental groups were under the standard of achievement. The mean score of post-test of the experimental group was 91.67 (it passed standard of achievement 78) and the mean score of post-test of the control group was 76.84 (it was under the standard of achievement 78). From those results, it can be seen that students in experimental group could pass the standard of achievement while students in control group could not pass the standard of achievement. After the researcher calculated the data into t-test formula, it showed that the value of t-test was 14.92. Based on the t-table in the df of 62, the value of t-table on the degree of significance 5% was 2.0 and t-table on the degree of significance 1% was 2.7 The data showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table. As a result, this learning method can be applied in the class in order to increase the students’ achievement in any subject especially in reading skill.
