Abstract
Most of English as Foreign Language (EFL) students still have problems in using grammar because of difficulty in composing an effective writing. In English class, grammar has been seen to be a problem and to stand in the way of helping learners to communicate fluently. Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a method that teaches students how to translate source language to target language by using correct grammar and makes the students learn their mistakes before so they will not do the same way. This research is about using Grammar Translation Method in teaching writing at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Gondanglegi. The main purpose of this study is to find out whether or not significant the effectiveness of GTM method improve students’ writing skill. This study employed quantitative design. There were two groups of sample, they were experimental and control groups. The population of this study was 2nd grades students. The researcher took 50 students as the sample. After the researcher give treatment grammar translation method to the the experience group as well as the lecturing method to the control group were implemented, the researcher gave pretest and postest in order to collect the data. After collecting, gathering and analyzing the data, the researcher found that the effectiveness of Grammar Translation Method in teaching writing showed a good impact on the students’ writing. Besides, based on the data analysis of the pretest and posttest result of both groups processed by using Independent Sample T-Test on SPSS, it was found that t-value was lower than 0.05. In other words, the effectiveness of Grammar Translation Method improves the students’ writing.
