Abstract

Language is very important for communication because without it society cannot interact with others clearly. People create language variation in order to make communication easier. One of language variations is register, which depends on profession groups who use specific vocabularies. This research focused only on the kinds of English registers used by PT. Telkom Community of Malang, the meaning of the registers and the reasons why they used them in their communication. This research used descriptive qualitative research design, which described the phenomena about the English registers used by PT. Telkom Community of Malang. The subjects of the study were all of the ten staff of Human Resources Office of PT. Telkom. Three instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire, interview and documentary. The data were analyzed by identifying the kinds of the English registers, the meaning of English registers and the reasons why they used them based on questionnaire. The research findings showed that the PT. Telkom Community of Malang used two kinds of English registers. They were formal registers and informal registers. There were 17 formal registers and 17 informal registers. The meanings of the English registers were obtained based on the professional context of the registers. There were some reasons of using English registers. First, the employees used English registers because of the company rule stating that they had to understand the meaning of registers and when PT. Telkom had gone international. Second, the English registers made employees more understandable in their conversation with other employees. Last, the English registers gave advantages for employees because they could increase their English vocabularies.
