Abstract

Speaking is a skill that enables us to produce utterances which involves expressing ideas and opinions. Moreover, speaking is the most difficult aspect for students to master since there are a lot of components involve. Therefore,to make the teaching and learning speaking interesting and easy to understand, the lecturer has to use some techniques of teaching effectively. Yet, there are still difficulties faced by the lecturer during teaching speaking. The aim of this research was to analyze and describe the difficulties which happened in speaking class. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design to describe the difficulties in speaking class. The researcher used qualitative research design based on the purposes of study that observed difficulties in speaking class naturally. The data of this research was collected from the class observation and interview the English lecturer. In addition, the data were displayed in the form of narrative. The result of observation and interview showed that the English lecturer faced four difficulties or problems while teaching speaking. Those are low participation, mother tongue use, difficulty in understanding English instruction, and unconducive place to study. However, the lecturer had some ways to cope with those difficulties or problems such as motivating the students, guiding the students to speak, classroom management, and grabbing students’ attention.
