Abstract

Depression is one of the effects of the various problems of life that can not be resolved. In addition, the identity crisis, lack of clarity about the meaning and purpose in life, increasing greed and conflicts of interest and melunturnya values and appreciation of religious traditions also became one of the factors causing the emergence of depression. From this background, the Islamic attempt to provide a new alternative and add to the discourse in the world of psychology, particularly with regard to psychotherapy, in this case is fasting. Fasting can help to cure various diseases closely related to mental health, as with fasting can resist the passions and impulses are negative. This research was conducted to determine the effect of fasting to decrease depressive symptoms in patients with post-medical. This study uses non-experimental single-case design or a case study with 1 person and subject specific requirements that the subject was still experiencing symptoms of depression and had not received medical treatment (medical) or other therapies. To determine the condition of the symptoms of pre-interviewing subjects and assessment pre-therapy treatment using a reference from the DSM IV-TR. Fasting therapy given in this study were fasting Sunnah Monday-Thursday and held for 8 weeks and then followed with a follow-up phase for 2 weeks. To know the development of the condition of the subject, every weekend after the fasting therapy to be evaluated by using self-report. From the research that has been conducted, showing that fasting can give effect in decreasing symptoms of depression in patients with depression post-medical. However, in the case of this study, fasting therapy should be followed by another supporter of alternative therapies or coping to achieve maximum results.
