Abstract

Literature is a part of language, it is the expression of beautiful thought and ideas in beautiful language. Song is one of the most popular literary works. In the song lyrics usually appear figurative language for combination. Figurative language is figures of speech that surprise us with the unique comparison. This study focused on figurative language used in “When You’re Gone” song by Avril Lavigne which was released in June 2007. This study is aimed at finding the kind of figurative language of song lyric and exploring the meaning of each figurative language in “When You’re Gone” song lyric. The research approach of this study employed objective research approach; it studied the literary works as a work that is free from the author’s experience and social cultural background. The data collection and data analysis were based on the “When You’re Gone” song lyric by Avril Lavigne. Based on data analysis, it was found that were three kinds of figurative language. The figurative language consists of five hyperboles, one simile, and one repitition. Hyperbole makes “When You’re Gone” song has dramatic effect about the sadness of three different age groups when they are missing someone that they really love and very close to them. Simile is describing someone feeling when she or he misses someone that they really love and close. The last is repetition shows us how important the boy for the girl, the husband for the pregnant woman, and the wife for the older man. The repetition could also mean that they think about their constantly and they are (someone that they miss) the only cure for their broken heart and lonely feeling.
