Abstract

Reading is one of the basic skills taught to the students at junior and senior high school. This research focused on the difficulties faced by the students of MTs Al-Hidayah Liang on reading narrative text. This research develops two research problems. First, what are the students’ difficulties in reading narrative text? Second, what are the solutions in student’s opinion? Meanwhile, the objectives of this research are to know the students’ difficulties in reading narrative text as well as to identify the solution in student opinion to solve their problem. Phenomenological qualitative research was employed to investigate the difficulties in reading narrative text faced by the students of MTs Al-Hidayah Liang. The instrument used in this study was structured interview with the students of MTs Al-Hidayah Liang. Next, the data were analyzed qualitatively. The researcher employs snowball sampling. The researcher stops collecting the data once the data is saturated. The researcher revealed the difficulties in reading was due to the difference between writing and spelling. Second, the problem lied as well on the difference of pronunciation and spelling. Furthermore, it was because of the lack of the students’ reading habit. It means the students in MTs Al-Hidayah Liang have APD (Auditory Processing Disorder) learning disorder. This is a learning disorder that has difficulty with a group of sounds that compose words, sentences, and stories. Furthermore, the researcher identified the solution toward the problems based on the students’ opinion. First, the students stated they should study harder than before. Second, they should practice reading English text in their leisure time. They stated as well that learning more about English vocabulary was one of the solutions to solve their problems.
