Abstract

Translation is a transfer process from source language text (SL) into target language (TL). In translation there are some strategies in translating from one language to another language, one of them is the strategy in translating realia. Realia are words and expressions for culture specific material elements. This research aims to: (1) explain the strategies to translate realia used by Dewi KZ in translating novel Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, (2) identify the strategies used to translate realia used by Dewi KZ in translating novel Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. This research conducted by means of qualitative research design by using document analysis as research method. The researcher obtained the data through analysis in novel Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. There are 17 chapter contained in novel Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. The researcher analysis chapter by chapter to identify realia strategies used in this novel, then the researcher compare, matched and analyzed into English and Indonesian version. The research result showed that there were six translation strategies of realia in novel Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone they were: (1) Maintenance (2) Calque (3) Omission (4) Adaptation (5) Approximation (6) Description. The number of realia that has found as many as 55 realia.
