Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the ability to make mathematical models of students in solving the problem of story problems. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Subjects in this study were six students who were taken according to the test results of the ability to make mathematical models with high, medium, and low categories. Each category consists of two students. Data were analyzed by data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students with high mathematical abilities understood well the meaning of each model that had been made compared to students with moderate and low abilities. High-ability students understand the substance of the material that must be used to solve story problems. Students who are capable of being able to make mathematical models precisely at each stage of problem solving, but do not understand the meaning of the examples made. Students are capable of understanding the substance of the material that must be used to solve story problems, but are not thorough in solving the problem so that the answers that have been obtained are not correct. Low-ability students are able to make mathematical models precisely at each stage of problem solving but do not understand the meaning of each example and model that has been made. Low-ability students do not understand the substance of the material that must be used to solve story problems, and have difficulty in working on problems due to forgetting the material that has been given.
