Abstract

@DailyManly is an Instagram social media account from Indonesia that informs about male masculinity from 6 years ago to the present. An account that contains about how this metrosexual man has a lot of attention for the public, especially Instagram users by displaying a foreign male model as the content. Utilizing the advantages of Instagram as a social media that is quite popular at the moment, @dailymanly has attracted the interest of audiences and has become an account for men's lifestyle information that has as many as 301 thousand followers in 2018. In this study entitled "Representation of Masculinity in Social Media" the researchers analyzed the description of masculine men displayed on Instagram social media, using Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis as his method. And the purpose of this study is to interpret the overall representation of male masculinity displayed by Instagram social media accounts @ dailymanly. The research conducted in September 2017 to February 2018 uses interpretative qualitative research and the Roland Barthes analysis method. Sources of research data from images disposted via social media Instagram @dailymanly, from the internet, thesis journals, previous research and several books. Based on the analysis carried out by the researcher, the @dailymanly Instagram account attracted interested people with a total of 301,000 followers. @dailymanly has represented the concept of masculinity of men who previously did not know fashion as a standard of masculinity, became a concept of metrocessual men who glorified fashion, or outward appearance as a picture of a masculine man. The concept of a masculine man is a man who looks attractive, glamorous, looks successful and well-established, an athletic body shape has a jambang / brewok which is a myth that has an athletic body shape is a public belief gained from the Dutch colonial era as a masculine figure to this day .
