Abstract

Sexism is a kind of discrimination that based on one’s gender. Sexism can appear in the advertisement, song, or movie. In a superhero movie, oftentimes the female superhero are shown by wearing sexy outfits meanwhile the male one is fully armored. This action itself is an example of sexism. This study was conducted to attain the types of sexism in The Avengers movie based on the Sara Mills’ theory in the “Language and Sexism” book. This study investigates the types of sexism in The Avengers movie. In this study the researcher used overt sexism type because it is direct and easy to understand. The Avengers is the movie that chosen as the object of the study, because it is a well-known superhero movie which could have sexism in the language that the casts deliver. The data were collected by the means of qualitative approach and document analysis. The researcher watched the movie, and read the movie script to make sure that there is no words would be overlooked. Then, the found sexism words were classified into the each types of sexism based on the Mills’ theory. Based on the document analysis that the researcher conducted, there are only 3 words found that can be considered as sexism. The first one is mankind, which is classified in generic noun type. Actress is the second word that classified in the derivational sexism type, and the last one is son of a bitch which is suitable the sexism in insult terms type classification. The generic pronoun, and non-parallel terms were not found in the movie. Departing from the finding and discussion, this current study has arrived at the following conclusion: The Avengers movie is not sexist in the term of language because the researcher only found 3 sexism words in the movie. Also, instead of focusing on the equality between man and woman, this movie only focuses on the how the heroes keep the world in peace which makes the movie contains a few words of sexism only.
