Abstract

This study aims to improve the learning process and improve the ability to read the understanding of third grade students at Elementary School Tulusrejo 2 Malang through the use of Know Want Learned strategy. This type of research is Classroom Action Research that is implemented collaboratively with the teacher. The research used Kemmis & McTaggart model with four steps was planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of the research were students of three grade students in Tulusrejo 2 Elementary School District Lowok Waru Malang No 36 consisting of 18 male students and 15 female students. The techniques of data submittion used objective test and observation. Objective test used for measure the skills of reading comprehension and the purpose of observation was observe students and teacher activity. The techniques of data analysis were quantitative descriptive and qualitative descriptive. The results shows that the use of Know-Want to Know-Learned (KWL) method can improve the skills of reading comprehension for the fifth grade students in Kertosari Elementary School District Temanggung. The number of students who achieved the standard score on pre test was 42,43%, on cycle I was 72,73%, and on cycle II was 93,94%, while the average value of pre test was 61,23, of cycle I was 65,76,of cycle II was 80,30 which was a proof of the success of the product. The success of the process could be seen from the liveliness and enthusiasm that increased during learning process, students already dared to ask and give opinions actively and be more active in group discussion. The results this study indicate that the structure of synthesis analysis strategy can be used as reference in the implementation of learning process that can support the success of learning.
