Abstract

The broadcast program quality of Indonesia television industry is below its quality standards. According to KPI’S website kpi.go.id, it reveals that many public complaints are addressed to the content of broadcast program. One of the broadcast programs which owns many television viewers is reality show. “Karma” is the most discussed reality show, hitherto. In different circumstances, many television viewers do not find out that “Karma” violates 2012 P3SPS (Broadcasting Code of Conduct and Program Standards). Consequently, this research is aimed at knowing the violation frequency of the P3SPS and types of violation exist in the reality show program “Karma”. This research utilized descriptive content analysis method. The object of this research was Karma on episode 48 and 118. Likewise, shot was decided as unit analysis. Based on the articles of P3SPS, the categorization used were regarding respect for privacy rights, classification of broadcast programs, and broadcast programs with mystical, horror and supernatural content. Moreover, the researcher applied descriptive statistics in the form of frequency distribution table as data analysis technique. This research obtained 107 shots containing violations. The most category occurred was classification of broadcast programs which reached 67 shots or 62.62%. Thereon, broadcast programs with mystical, horror and supernatural content with a total 28 shots or 26.17% and privacy rights owned 12 shots or 11.21%. As the aforementioned data, it could be concluded that classification of broadcast programs truly dominated the violation. Last but not least, this program still offered several broadcast aspects which were inappropriate for adolescents i.e. they (teenager) might be influenced to believe in psychics, magic, supernatural and mystic.
