Abstract

Background: The benefits of super red dragon fruit peels (Hylocereus Costarricense) are its polyphenols and antioxidants richness. Antioxidants have the function to delay or inhibit oxidation reactions caused by free radicals. Cream preparations were made by adding the cream with super red dragon fruit peel extract and vitamin E with non-ionic emulsifiers combined with tween 80 and span 20. The non-ionic were added because it is neutral and stable in the presence of acids/bases from the cream component. Objective: To determine the antioxidant activity of super red dragon fruit peel extract, and also determine the type of emulsion, physical characteristics (organoleptic, pH, viscosity, and spreadability) of cream preparations in 3 formulas (FI 2%, FII 4%, FIII 6%). Methods: DPPH immersion test (DPPH method), emulsion type test, visually observed organoleptic, pH, viscosity, and spreadability test were analyzed by using one way annova statistic test method. Results and Conclusions: The antioxidant activity (IC50 value) on super red dragon fruit peel extract was 90,11 ppm, it can be justified that the super red dragon fruit peel extract has the active antioxidant activity. Cream preparations combined with super red dragon fruit peel extract and vitamin E on all formulas have a soft texture, light pink, and common dragon fruit or pitaya scent. On the emulsion type test, the three formulas have O/W (Oil in Water) type. The results of statistic tests with one way annova showed that there were no significant differences in viscosity (22333-24833 cPS), and spreadability (0,0417-0,0553 g/cm). Meanwhile, pH test (5,76-5,99) significant differences were obtained.
