Abstract

Nowadays, practical and safe packaging needs to be developed. Therefore, an organic packaging starts to develop and this kind of organic packaging has a similar characteristic as plastic, but biodegradable. The edible film constituent components consist of different types of natural material that is easy to get. Those materials are hydrocolloid, lipid, and composite. One of rich horticultural commodities that has such a large number of edible film constituent component is Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus) or better known with Ladies Finger. This research was aimed to know the effect of adding CMC concentration towards the physical characteristic, mechanical, and the Okra fruit mucus edible film barrier. This research used 2 factors factorial Randomized Block Design (RDB) method. The first factor was CMC with 0,75%, 1%, and 1,25% concentration, and the second factor was sorbitol adding with 0,5%, 1%, and 1,5% concentration. The tested parameters were thickness, transparency, tensile strength, elongation, solubility, and the rate of water vapor transmission. The result of the research showed that there was an effect between CMC concentration and sorbitol concentration towards thickness, transparency, tensile strength, elongation, the rate of water vapor transmission and WVTR edible film produced. The best produced edible film was C1S1 with CMC concentration of 0,75% and sorbitol 0,5%, producing 0,05 mm thickness; 4,62 A546/mm transparency; 1,86 MPa tensile strength; 239,19% elongation; 17,63% solubility and 2,39 g/m2/24hours WVTR.
