Abstract

Pyrophyllite material is one of the mineral source in East Java and it is still not used yet for communal affairs. Pyrophyllite is a metamorphic rock with numerous contents of aluminum silicate. The number of pyrophyllite is approximately millions of tons and around 20 Ha in Sumbermanjing, South Malang. The high content, size, and volume of silica allow pyrophyllite to be used for alternative binding material as a cement replacement. The engineering process of pyrophyllite is conducted by reflux method through acid (H2SO4) and alkaline (NaOH) solutions starting from 1M, 2M, 3M, 4M and 5M with a temperature of 100 degree Celsius. The experiment involves physical property, chemical composition, material reactivity (XRD and SEM test) before and after the reflux process which is compared by cement materials. The results of the research showed that the engineering process on pyrophyllite materials using NaOH activator (Alkali) and activator H2SO4 (acid) will affect chemical composition, physical and reactivity properties, such as BJ, smoothness, and consistency are higher than cement. The composition of pyrophllite is not extremely different before and after the engineering process. The reactivity nature of pyrophllite material is more increased after conducting the engineering process.
