Abstract
Background: Catechins are polyphenol compounds contained in green tea plants, which have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants serve as an inhibitor of the aging process resulting from free radicals. VCO as a base of cream preparations because it is a natural skin moisturizer and able to prevent tissue damage and provide skin protection. Purpose: This study was aimed to find out the physical characteristics of green tea antioxidant cream (Camellia sinensis L.) on the basis of VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) with various levels of green tea. Method: Green tea extract obtained by maceration. The potential antioxidant of green tea extract was tested by DPPH method (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrihydrazyl). Formula creams made variations of base VCO ie 5%, 7.5% and 10%. Tests of physical properties include viscosity, dispersion, pH and physical stability test cream with Freeze Thaw method. The physical properties of the cream were analyzed by One Way Anova test. Results and conclusions: The IC50 of green tea extract had antioxidant potency after DPPH tested is 8,37 ppm, on a VCO basis. Physical properties showed elevated levels of VCO did not affect the physical characteristics of the preparations and required the range of standard a good cream preparations.
