Abstract

Background: Free radicals on the skin can be absorbed by antioxidants because they are contributing one or more electrons that prevent the formation of new free radicals. The super red dragon fruit peel extract contains anthocyanin which functioned as an antioxidant. Following that case, a cream was made from super red dragon fruit peel extract with Vitamin E by using Glycerol Monostearate (GMS) emulsifier. Objective: To determine the physical characteristics (organoleptic, pH, viscosity, and spreadability), and also to determine the type of emulsion in cream preparations with 3 formulas with variations of concentration such as F1 (8%), FII (10%), and FIII (12%), and to identify the antioxidant effectiveness from super red dragon fruit peel extract. Method: DPPH method, organoleptic test was done by visual test. Emulsion type test, pH test, viscosity test, and spreadability test were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA statistic method. Results and Conclusions: Cream preparation from dragon fruit peel extract and vitamin E on all formulas has a soft, pink texture and common scent of dragon fruit or pitaya with O / W (Oil in Water) emulsion type results on all formulas. From the statistic test results with one-way ANOVA method, the results of pH is (5.54-5.65) and the results of viscosity is (21167-25333 cPs), and the spreadability test which is (0.04-0.06) did not show a significant difference between the formulas. Super red dragon fruit peel extract has an IC50 value of 90.11 ppm, which can be concluded that there is effectiveness as an active antioxidant.
