Abstract

The objective of this research is to talk about the concept of Shaik Hussain bin Shaik Yacob’s leadership in developing Muhammadiyah’s institutions in Singapore. Besides, this research is also to understand Shaik Hussain’s aim in developing the institutions. This research is classified as qualitative-approach research, whom the subject is president of Muhammadiyah Singapore. Without any higher education, Shaik Hussain has managed to reach the aim of developing Muhammadiyah institutions. Shaik Hussain has also been honoured by the Singapore government, and has been awarded certificate of Asatizah Recognition Scheme as ‘fellow without producing any certificates’ by Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) and Singapore Islamic Scholars & Religious Teachers Association (PERGAS). This research is classified as field research, as the person (subject) is still alive. Documentation and interview will be used in collecting data, whereas descriptivemethod will be used in analysing data. The result shows that the purpose of Shaik Hussain in developing Muhammadiyah’s learning institutions is to give opportunity towards formal education to Singapore-Muslim who has the willing to learn Islamic religion. It is part of tajdid and to also fulfill Singapore-Muslim by actualizing ‘islamic environment’ and ‘islamic education’. While developing the institutions, Shaik Hussain has played the role of a transformational leader. Year by year, all the institutions that have been built up are developing and have reached much progress. This made Shaik Hussain a transformational leader, on succeeding in building up Muhammadiyah institutions. All the achievements have become an appraisal towards the Singapore government.
