Abstract

Corn is one of food commidities that quite important in Indonesia. It is the second food plant commodities after rice that is prioritized on the main target as the food self-suufficiency. The BPS data state that the corn production on the year of 2016-2017 experiences the decreasing in several provinces, it causes the unstable cost of corn. The cultivation technique using planting distance system is seldom to be used; moreover, the farmers only use the conventional planting distance system. Therefore, it needs to be conducted the cultivation by using the different planting row system, in which it is by using Jajar Legowo that is commonly used in the paddy plants that have different sizes. This research aimed at finding out the growth and yield of nine corn plants that were cultivated by using Jajar Legowo planting distance system. This research was conducted in the trial garden of Jatropha at Kedung penggaron village, Kejayaan district, Pasuruan regency. The nine corn varieties were BISI 2, BISI 18, BISI 226, BISI 228, BISI 816, DK 77, PERTIWI 3, P21, NK 6172. The trial design used RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) of one factor. Each treatment was repeated in three times. The total plants for each treatment were 12, the samples that observed were 4 plants. The variables that observed were the plant height, the total leaves, the stem diameter, the appearance of male and female inflorescence, te height position of cobs and the total cobs, the cob’s length, the cob’s diameter, the cob’s weight for each plant, the weight of peeling cobs, the cob’s weight for each plot, the total seeds and the seeds density. The collected data would be analyzed by using F-test in the level of 1% and it was continued by the Turkey test of 5%. The research results of nine varieties of corn that tested using Jajar Legowo system showed that the growth response of vegetative was relatively same, except for the varieties of P21 that had bigger plant height and stem diameter in the age of 14 days after planting, while the generative growth and the yield (77 days after planting) was relatively same, except for the corn varieties of BISI 226 that produced the more total rows and seeds density.
