Abstract

Background : The case of breast cancer is increase significantly every year, followed by its mortality number. Cancer treatments that currently used such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy cause many adverse side effects. Mahogany seeds have been traditionally used in the treatment of cancer, amoebiasis, cough, chest pain, hypertension, diabetes and malaria. Objectives :The aim of this research is to find out the cytotoxic properties of mahagony (Swietenia mahagoni) seed ethanolic extract againts breast cancer cell (T47D) in vitro using Microculture Tetrazolium Saltassay. Method : Cytotoxic activity of the etanolic extract were determined using Microculture Tetrazolium Saltassay. Thin Layer Chromatograpgy also used in this research to identify the chemical constituent of mahagony seed ethanolic extract. The IC50 was analized with probit regresion on SPSS 18 programs for Windows. Result and Conclusion : Preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening using Thin Layer Chromatography reveals the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, antraquinones and flavonoids. According to National Cancer Institute (NCI) an extract can cosidered active as anticancer if it has IC50 value <30 µg/mL, moderate (IC50 30 µg/mL ≤ IC50<100 µg/mL) and inactive (IC50 ≥100 µg/mL). But, the IC50 value of mahagony seed etanolic extract were found 5496,193 µg/mL. From tihis result it can concluded that mahagoni (Swietenia mahagoni) seed ethanolic extract does not have anticancer effect on breast cancer cell (T47D).
